I decided to paint in the background base colors first in this painting. A lot of the background is out of focus so I just blocked in the colors loosely.
More of the background takes shape at this stage of the painting. The two couches, curtains, and television can be seen in the out of focus background. You can even see the two paintings hanging on opposite sides of the wall. I also laid in the base color of the dog in the foreground.
In this stage of the painting, I add in the foreground carpet base color and paint in the other key subject, the baby. Now we see the entire composition of the painting take shape.
The out of focus background is darkened with some dark blue and brown color mix. Some of the detail in the dog’s eye and face is painted in. I also paint in the sunlight yellow and bring in some orange and brown into the curtains near the window.
I painted more detail into the dog at this stage of the painting. The background is also darkened and more color is also painted in. There is much more contrast between the dark and light areas of the painting, which gives brings forward the two main subjects. A bit more detail work is added into the blurred background as well.
Time to add in some of the foreground carpet pattern. Now the entire painting is starting to take shape. A light pink is introduced into the dog, giving it more dimension.
A yellow white is used for the foreground detail. Separation between the dark and light of the carpet pattern is much more obvious. The front carpet area now looks like something you can touch.
I introduce a grey color into the carpet, creating more depth and volume in the pattern. I also darken the shadow areas in the baby’s clothing.
Lots of detail is added into the dog. I also complete the red area of the rug. Some blue is also painted in the background to tone down the brown in the curtains and window area.
